Emailing sessions?

Ok so I work alot with a buddy of mine in california. I normally will send him a cd with the session in the mail so he can work on different parts then he mails it back to me. I know there has to be a better way. Is there a way to email the sessions to someone or will the file be to big?

You couldn't really email it to someone, but there are other options like YouSendIt or Whalemail that you can use to upload your sessions and the receiver gets a link to download the files.

Buying some FTP space may be a way to go, too. You can get plenty of space and bandwidth starting at about $3/mo - try www.1and1.com, for instance.

Depending on your upload speeds, it may take a good long while to upload sessions. For instance, a 1GB session would take about 9 hours with a 256kbps upload connection.

Funny you ask. I relocated to South Florida and had to come up with solutions on how to collaborate with my partners in California.

Here's a great way to do it as long as your sessions weigh in under 1GB:

1. Make a G-Mail Account for transferring sessions.
2. Download Firefox
3. Download the G-Space Plugin for Firefox.


GSpace is a sick way to do this, and we do it all the time. Basically you upload your session to GSpace, then give your friend access to the same G-Space account. You can then upload your session to your Gmail account in their online server, he logs in, and can download whatever you stored in the account.

Their servers are pretty quick and we've thrown alot of 7-800MB Pro Tools sessions back and forth with great results.

I've used Skype to pass large mix file (GBs)

It works very well and then you don't have to wait for upload and download.

Another alternative is the WD WorldBook network drives. I have one on a PC at home and a friend several states away can access it for uploading or downloading any size file. Just transfer the that and your collaborator can grab it any time and then put it back with changes.
