Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
Hi there
I am currently mixing multiple television series in Protools HD Version 10.3.8. All is well with the exception of the real-time bounce to disk to create stereo masters. I want to have a second system for (initially) creating masters. So my question is this. If I purchase a new computer and install the latest version of PT HD, and import the PT HD 10.3.8 session, will it open and export (bounce to disk)? Thank you Joe |

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
It will open. If you save session in that never version of PT it will open at PTHD 10 as well!

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
The new version will open in PT 10 as well? Also, the plugins that I use will need to be installed on the new system as well. Will they work as well?

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
You should download the latest versions of your plugins to work with the latest version of Pro Tools.

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
Understood. Will it matter if the older version on the other system has the older version, perhaps not 64bit. Not sure if the Waves Platinum bundle for PTHD 10 was 64 or not?

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
Does not matter; however, although session file is compatible from 10.0.0 to latest, you need to be aware of one thing. The features of a newer version are obviously missing from earlier version, so opening the session in PT10 again makes the use of new features disappear because older version has no knowledge about the data, it is just dropped.

Quote:
2) if all are available in 64-bit, you have to update or upgrade to the latest version of the plugins (make sure this will not kill your activations for 32-bit versions on your PT10 machine ... happened with Soundtoys. In that case: either the dev can sort you out with a NFR for your PT10 system or you buy a new licence for the new system) 3) once you have both machines running, make sure the sessions actually sound the same and everything comes back with the same settings. you'll have to do some critical listening of your bounces to see if anything changes between the two systems. Waves is the only dev you mentioned, their support is usually excellent so if you have any issues they should be able to sort you out/tell you how to proceed. I'm fairly sure all the Waves stuff recalls with no issues. People like to diss Waves but at least their stuff works for years and years across generations of machines with no issues. For me, mix on system A (PT10) bounce on system B (PT 2021) would be too stressful, too many variables. However I'm mixing music with a crap ton of 3rd party plugins and I'm constantly trying new things. If you have a limited selection of plugs and a set workflow, you may be able to build confidence working on one and bouncing on the other. Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

Re: Opening Protools HD Session In Newer Version
Waves support is excellent in taking your money and delivering you latest version, but it is a disaster if you need support for older version. Good luck in getting a V8 working on Lion (PT10) for example. They do not give you old iLok licenses even if you offer them extra money for it. Nada. They only support their own license central.
