Default Recording Virtual Instruments - Boom

I am a complete newbie trying to make my first recording.

I have worked out how to record the virtual instrument Boom but it seems a bit inefficient so please tell me if I have got this right.

I have not been able to record an instrument track with Boom as an insert even though I can hear the sound and the sound meters on the track go up and down with the sound - the recording is blank.

I have not been able to record an audio track with Boom as an insert even though I can hear the sound and the sound meters on the track go up and down with the sound - the recording is blank.

I have been able to record by sending the output of an instrument track with Boom as an insert into the input of an audio track.

Is this how it is supposed to work?

You are correct, that's how it must work.
