We have some G-SPEED Shuttle SSD TB3 boxes. But, unfortunately, it doesn't seem that they sell them drive-less anymore (they did when we bought.) We have them each loaded with 8 SSD drives.

Compact chassis designed to just on a desktop may be a lot better... if the fans are quiet enough. The big if for me. (and yes I know the Blackmagic Multidock has no fan noise, has no fan).
I swapped out the OWC Thunderbay for one of the Blackmagic Multidocks.

The OWC Thunderbays DO have a fan but I disabled the fan in my old one, if you are using just 2.5" SSD's then there won't be an issue of overheating.
Frankly OWC should have an off switch for the fans on those devices but I can see why they don't- warranty issues for people who don't know better.

The OWC Thunderbay is too loud for a control room imho.

The Multidock is a great device.
I've never knocked a drive.
I like that I can share the switch it from being 4 drives on one computer to 2 drives on 2 computers each.
I wish the switch was that was on the front of the device though, rather than the back.

James which OWC Thunderbay did you have a Mini? And did it have the Noctua fan? I'm unclear if they switched to Noctua with the Thunderbolt 3 models or at a different time.

Hi Eric,

I can strongly recommend the OWC Thunderbay 8. You can read all about it and my experiences here... OWC ThunderBay 8 Tested - Thunderbolt 3 Storage Solution - Our Verdict. Hope that helps. Mike

Thanks Mike! I did end up with an OWC, but the 4-bay, since that's all I'll need.

BTW, it's nice to finally see another forum member who'd joined the DUC as early as me.

I have this. I run it as a raid 10 (1+0) so you get the best of both worlds. about 1000 read/write and redundancy in case of failure.
