Default Big Sur update - now HDX card is dead

I have a 2019 Mac Pro Rack with an HDX card and HD/IO.
I finally updated to Big Sur, then updated Pro Tools & the HD (and DX) driver.

Now... my HDX card is not recognized by the Mac/Pro Tools system.
My support agent is recommending a hardware upgrade.

Really? All that has changed today was software.
The current hardware has been working for years.

I did reset the HDX card (didn't work) and reseated it, uninstalled the HD driver and reinstalled it.

Has anyone seen this problem? My PT system is "bricked".

Can you go back to your previous OS and confirm that everything is still working?

Which version of PT are you running?

There’s an HDX firmware upgrade associated with the version of PT which is certified for Big Sur.

I upgraded to Mac OS 11.4.
I upgraded to Pro Tools 21.3.1.176. Also the HD driver.
The first time I ran Pro Tools I believe it updated the firmware on the HDX card.
Since then the card is invisible to Pro Tools and Digi Test.
I pressed the reset switch on the HDX (with cover open and power applied) and the LED did not flash as described in the instructions.

I will consider going back to High Sierra although I've never reverted a Mac OS.

I asked Avid support about repair options but have not heard back.

I'm not convinced it's the card... which an OS back-step may prove.

Thanks, Paul

There is a tech support document floating around that includes some extra steps if HDX cards aren’t recognised by newer versions of OSX. I also don’t think this has much to do with your HDX card being broken, but rather the jump
From high Sierra to big sur.

When you installed the HD Driver, did you get a prompt asking you to “allow” it in OSX? That is certainly a new security step that has been required from at least Catalina onwards. Without it, the HD Driver probably isn’t functioning.

My HDX card is now visible, the path is not completely obvious to me:

1) Disable System Integrity Protection (csrutil disable)
2) uninstall & reinstall HD driver
3) HDX card visible !
4) Enable SIG (csrutil enable)
5) HDX card not visible
6) Reinstall the MOTU MIDI driver - somehow it went missing and I saw a boot-time message about an out-of-date MOTU driver
7) Restart and HDX card is visible - short fan noise at boot and when launching Pro Tools to indicate a connection to the card.

Phew, Paul S.
