Default Mbox2 Mini vs Mbox 1

I'm asking for a friend. He has a powerbook 1.67ghz machine with 512 of ram. He's got a defective DIMM slot that Apple is going to fix under warranty, then he'll upgrade to 1gig or maybe 1.5 gigs. Anyway, the dilemma for him is should he buy an Mbox 2 Mini or a possibly used Mbox 1? I read where his specific model of powerbook has an issue w/ the phantom power of the Mbox 2 mini not working. But that really won't be an issue for him cuz he doesn't do any field recording.

I guess my question is, which I wasn't able to clearly find on here, is if the Mbox2 Mini is much more preferred than the Mbox 1? Or is the Mbox 1 something they got right and screwed things up w/ the Mbox 2?

Thanks for the help!

Happy Holidays!

Jason

Phantom power isn't just about field recording - it's about any recording using a microphone requiring phantom power, which means most condenser microphones.

I'm sorry. I didn't make the point that he has a mic pre that he uses now. So, it provides Phantom power, thus without it, he can't use the Mbox pre.

Has the Mbox2 Mini been out long enough to know if they got it right?

I haven't heard anything bad about it specifically, but I'm sure the converters are better than something 3-4 years old. Besides, if he ever wants to do 96K recording, the Mbox 1 won't do it.

The converters are WAY better. Even better than the converters in the 002 IMHO. I would go for the Mini any day. You also get the ignitionpack wich can be fun

mbox 2 mini has better converters than the 002? , i don`t think so.
I own the Digi 002 and a Mbox 2 Pro..and, Believe me, the 002 pre / Converters are WAY better than the Mbox 2 pro`s.

Just try them on acoustic guitars and Vocals, I Think you`ll hear the difference.
