Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
I was surprised to notice that ProTools uses only 4 cores, is this normal and what should I do?

Re: ProTools does not use the entire CPU
If it’s working, I’d say leave well enough alone. (It’s common to reserve at least two cores for the OS.)

Re: ProTools does not use the entire CPU
I wrote this up a while ago:
https://www.pro-tools-expert.com/hom...d-be-pay-to-it The short take is that you really shouldn't bother with the PT usage meter. Use the meter that's supplied with the operating system. |

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
But isn't it true that all inserts of one track must live on the same core?

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
Yes that's generally true. But in my experience, PT does a good job of spreading a load across all cores. That's been true on my 4-core, my 8-core and my 16-core. The usage meter is just awful, but it has been for years. I'd love to see it reflect the truth.

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
So in general it's awfull but isn't this case here it tends to show what's going on because we have just two tracks and one of them with all the inserts :)

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
That could be true, but I'd bring up the real CPU load monitor. It's called Activity Monitor on the Mac. If you're using really piggy plugins, then perhaps you can use auxes to set up an alternate path. Bit of a pain with inline, but you can get there.

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
Thanks for that article Michael, I had never seen it before. The meters *are* super annoying and come up here frequently.
Folks may also need to be a little careful assuming perfectly symmetrical workload distribution across what any meter shows is necessarily the best thing. It may not be the case when CPU core cache effects get involved, or with hyperthreading, or where there are very few plugins involved. |

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
Doesn't matter what you do--you'll always get that bulge in the middle. Several years ago I had a conversation with the chief PT designer at the time. He described what was going on in that meter. It was intended to show some 'other stuff' as well. Perhaps Avid thought it would be primarily of interest for internal analysis. But lots of people use it and are continually fooled by it.

Re: Pro Tools does not use the entire CPU
It's also worth mentioning that I've been told that plug-in design plays a bigger role in spread than the DAW host design.
