Audio Files corrupt on FireWire drive
Just had some audio files go bad on a fire wire drive. Didnt have any real problems and then all of a sudden I open a PT session and it is looking for just a handfull of files and when I find them(in the same audio files folder as all the other ones) it says its an "unknown file type" yet its a SDII file that was created in the same PT session. And last night those same PT sessions were just fine. The only thing Ive done is unmount the drive the proper way. Go figure. Thank God for tape backup or id be screwed. I'll just format the drive to fix the problem but sure wouldnt expect this. Ive Multitracked to the drive for about 3 weeks without a format and I usually format everytime I multitrack to it. So is this why firewire is so much cheaper than UW scsi? I hope not. Any ideas?

Re: Audio Files corrupt on FireWire drive
Hey Mills, You've probably already thought of/done this, but did you run Disk Warrior on the drive? It sounds like file headers or directory data has gotten scrambled somehow, and DW should be able to get those things straightened out. It's worked miracles for me on numerous occasions, both with SCSI and FW drives! (BTW, Alsoft is advertising a version that's OSX compatible if that's what you're running these days.) I'd be a little nervous to keep working on a drive that's gackin' without some diagnostic reassurance! Good luck... thank goodness you're manic about backups...
Warmest Regards, Brian |

Re: Audio Files corrupt on FireWire drive
Yea, The diskwarrior idea came to me as I was sleeping. I ran it with no luck. It made a couple of small repairs and thats it. Still the files say "Unknown type" Almost done verifying all the retrospect tapes and then ill format it. Weeeee!

Re: Audio Files corrupt on FireWire drive
Well can you believe Norton 6 found a bad Volume Header Block and repaired it then found Damaged Resource Forks. Most folks say Norton on Firewire drives isnt a good idea. But cant hurt to try now! Thank god for the backup. Dont know what happened but about 15 or 20 audio files died.
Producher, where can I get Data Rescue? Ill give it a go. Thanks for all the help. Mills |

Re: Audio Files corrupt on FireWire drive
I had this problem when using a firewire enclosure with an ATA drive. That was because I had not set the drive in the enclosure to be the master. It also seemed to copy very slow until I changed the jumper settings.
