Default P55 chipset vs X58 chipset, will P55 chipset work?

Hello,

My Sandra report is listed below. My processor is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz and the chipset is Intel P55 (for some reason Sandra did not see the chipset, but I did find out that it was the Intel P55).

I have searched the forums and I know that Pro Tools 9 will run with the X58 chipset but have not been able to find if it will run with the P55 chipset.

Anyway, my question is this, will Pro Tools 9 run with my P55 chipset? Thank you in advance for your answers and help.

Also, I have been strongly advised to get a 2nd internal hard drive to record to because recording to my system drive will likely result in problems. So as I understand it, I should install Pro Tools 9 and any plug-ins to this 2nd drive and use this 2nd drive to record to. Is this correct? Thanks again.

I don't know for sure about the chipset, but PT and its resources should be installed to your system drive. The second drive is only for sessions and their data. The idea is that a drive shouldn't be interrupted by system access while audio data is being streamed from it.

That Operating System is not compatible and a dedicated recording drive is a Pro Tools requirement.

Thank you both very much for the info and help!

Yeah, it is odd that Sandra states I am using Windows Vista Home Media because when i look up my system info directly (via the control Panel) it says that I have Windows 7 Home Premium. Not really sure why Sandra read that wrong.

I went to the Software tab in Sandra and clicked on "Operating System" and got an interesting result. It stated that

Windows System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Media Center 6.01.7600

but under that it had

Platform Compliance: Win64 x64
Full Name: Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7600

What do you make of that?

Any ideas on whether or not the P55 chipset is okay for Pro Tools?

Thanks again!

What type of problems are you experiencing with Pro Tools running on that Dell rig?

I'm not experiencing any problems, I don't have Pro Tools 9 yet. I will be getting it soon and was just wondering if that P55 chipset would be okay. I have seen here on the forums that the X58 chipset with the i7 works fine. I just haven't found anything saying the same thing about the P55 chipset.

I have read that as long as my chip set and processor are from the same manufactureer (Intel in this case) that things should go okay. Hopefully that is true.

I was just wondering if anyone on here knew about the P55 chipset and if it would be okay with my set up.

Thanks

Based on your other thread, you have nothing to lose. If Pro Tools is your chosen DAW and the Dell (P55 Chipset) does not work, upgrade via a custom X58/Core i7 build.

That was kind of what I was thinking as well. Hopefully the P55 works right off the bat and just saves me any hassle at all LOL But if not, then yeah, upgrading to X58 shouldn't too tough or expensive.

Thanks

You should be fine with that chipset. I built a box for a friend using a motherboard with this chipset and it ran LE 8 without a hiccup. I think 9 shouldn't be any different.
