I was wondering that myself. I remember the MacPros being handled in Austin, TX, but most products are assembled in China, and likely affected by the shutdowns.

Mac Pros for the US are handled in Austin. The rest of the world, they too come from Asia. The Austin/Mac Pro situation was mostly a failed experiment. (The problem/bottle-neck is the tooling still comes from Asia so when parts break, the whole operation is stalled while waiting for replacement parts.)

I did read somewhere that the chip shortages of the last two years have really caused a lot of companies to start looking at making them here in the US again on a large scale. I would not be surprised if apple at some point setup a factory here or in Mexico for chips.

Are we terraforming new planets or making music/sound design/mixing stuff?

Seriously. If you're doing what you're doing now 'ok', the Max is gonna be ok. If you are 'using a ton of VI's maybe you need the Ultra. But maybe not.

If you have the 2019 28 core Mac Pro then I doubt you're even on this thread.

Therefore the 2019 cMP (Cheese grater Mac Pro) is over kill for you. So you don't need to terraform planets with the new 'Pro' 4 chip planet destroyer.

Seriously. get a grip of your bank account.

We have early bench marks. The Ultra s&^%$ on the single core score of the cMP 2019 (US$20k +++). Multi core is amazing too but not as high as cMP 2019.

RAM! No you don't need as much! There are real world tests online. I already posted one at the start of this thread. This is new tech. Don't even bother getting your fingers out and tryna doo the math. It's new and its faster. End of story.

"Ohh but I need to stream faster cause I need more RAM and I can't have it!". SO get a bigger SSD in it! The SSD speeds on these new Studio's are bonkers. Divide and conquer. You have suuuuper fast drives connected right to the motherboard.

We waited almost 10 years for the cMP 2019. You gonna wait another 1-2 years for a $20K USD machine cause you wanna destroy planets or terraform new ones?

Its funny really....

The M1 Ultra is 21% faster than the 28-core Mac Pro on single-core.

Yep. Thats what I just said despite an actual figure.

I don't think people realize how powerful these new machines are.....

Thanks for the link man

The M1 Ultra is 21% faster than the 28-core Mac Pro on single-core.

That’s incorrect.

It’s actually faster than the 28 core nMP on BOTH single core and multi core.

Mac Studio M1 Ultra 20 Core
Single Core = 1793
Multi Core = 24055

Mac Pro Intel 28 Core
Single Core = 1152
Multi Core = 19951

The Mac Studio is 56% faster in single core and 21% faster in multi core.

This machine is VERY powerful. Can only imagine what the Mac Pro variant will be capable of. If they can double the Ultra the same way they doubled the Max, you can essentially double the figures for multi core. As can be seen, there single core remains the same on the M1 variants. One would assume the clock speed doesn’t change. So it’s just the higher core count increasing the multi core results.

Unleash the thermal hounds, I'm expecting it's going to be amazing what a less thermally constrained Mac Pro will deliver.

And all this is just the CPU performance. I also look forward to a (distant) future to audio processing leveraging the processing capability of the built in GPUs (Metal is more than just graphics, it includes general purpose GPU processing). Once DAW and plugin developers know a Metal GPU is guaranteed to be present things may start looking to developers that it's worth leveraging them. I expect we'll see others innovators move there faster than Avid, especially folks just focusing on Mac.

And us audio peeps can take over the universe with our new Mac Pros
