Default WARNING - Carbon Copy Cloner 6

I know many here on DUC use CCC and I feel I should report this:
Simply put; I upgraded today, and on the first run my CCC bootable backup became not bootable. The system volume of the backup disappeared.
I've reported it to Bombich.

If you use ccc, just wait with the update.
I'll report when I hear from Mike, he's always helpful.

Well that’s not ideal. Thanks for the heads up.

Interested to see if this is a bug or isolated to your particular clone.

Please let us know when you hear back.

I’m not sure this is a problem with CCC, more an issue with changes to Mac OS. Apple is making bootable backups difficult.

I got this from Mike today:

Quote:
Correct, CCC deleted that volume. In contrast to the "Mac Mini HD Uranus" task, the "Mac Mini HD" task was configured to use the startup disk's Data volume as the source (that configuration change happened back on April 9). Technically this was a design goal in CCC v6 (the intention, however, was to remove older System volumes from the destination), but in this particular context the result certainly doesn't look correct. The backup is still a complete backup of all of your system settings, applications and user data.
These steps will correct the matter, assuming you want to keep the "CCC Mac Mini HD" volume bootable:
1. Open CCC and select the "Mac Mini HD" task
2. Click the "x" widget on the Source selector to clear out the current selection
3. Click on the Source selector and choose "Mac Mini HD" as the source to the task
When you run the task next, CCC will re-add a System volume to the destination and populate it with content.

Mike
Turns out, I have caused this myself by changing the source of the backup task to 'Mac Mini HD - Data' on april 9. The system volume stayed on the destination until first run of CCC 6, which has this function to delete older system volumes.

Superb service from Mike Bombich, as always. Be shure to set the 'Mac HD' and not the 'Mac HD - Data' as backup source if you want to have a bootable backup, and I can recommend the CCC 6 upgrade. It looks better and seems sleeker to use. 50% discount on the $35 price for owners of v5.

The question of bootable backups on OS'es past Catalina is one of the reasons I'm still on 10.15.7. Although I got the impression that Bombich had good hopes of tackling it. I've not checked on that for a long time.

Just to be clear, after changing the task to have the system volume as source and running it, like Mike adviced, the system volume was recreated on the destination, and things are back to normal. The backup is bootable again.
