Interesting, not with my S3 today but will try again soon. I did initially attempt what you described and it was still not budging. Perhaps I can tug some more knowing it's intended to lock. Thx.

Try gently wiggling it side to side as you pull on the cable. There's little metal catches that the slide is supposed to retract.

Yes, same with mine. I even tried pushing on the cable whilst, retracting the collar and then wriggling. Guess my metal catches just aren't retracting.

I can confirm that on the S3 at work, there is no sliding piece on the power cable and it just pulls right out...No locking mechanism.
