Hmm. guess I could try it. But when Avid Audio Server can see the interface fine, it's just that ProTools can't, it seems something else electronically/license-wise is amiss.
What the hell, I'm desperate, I'll try it.

You didn't specifically state that you put the Digilink license on your iLok. Did you put the license on your iLok?

Have you tried trashing prefs and rebooting?

"So then I restarted and relaunched iLok mgr and logged in and then found that I could activate it." Okay, to be clear, by "it" I meant I activated the DigiLink license on the iLok, yeah.

Yes, that was in my initial post.

Hey, I still have an active PT8 activation. It's on my other older Mac 3,1 that this newer 5,1 and PT12 is going to replace (once I get it working and I'm comfy with it). Would PT/iLok care about this? I know it would if I'd done an upgrade, but I bought this PT12 system as if I'm a new user, not as an upgrade (there was no upgrade path from 8 direct to 12)---but could that be causing this conflict? Seems not---even if it was a conflict, why would it allow me to use PT12 but only with the aggregate I/O.
I dunno, I'm just trying to brainstorm here.

Post a screen shot of the iLok asset in ILM.

Everything points to this being a regular PT asset and not HD. (launches, but doesn't see HD hardware)

Thanks for that nudge. I'd been trashing prefs and restarting a good deal earlier on but it had been a few powercycles since I'd done it. I did it again, after all the other things I tried, and that finally took!
I still find it strange that in all the documentation (installation guides, ref manuals, etc.) there was no mention of this DigiLink I/O process. It's been awhile since I launched a new platform with new periphs, but everytime I do I remember how confounding and incomplete Avid/Digi makes it.
Again, thanks to all of you who helped!
Now on to more mysteries---and then, eventually, maybe I can make music again.
HAHAHAHA. oh god.

And yes, I searched for about an hour on DUC and other sites and found no one with this same issue, must just not have used the magic search words. Darryl, you've been helpful to me in the past, and thanks for your quick responses, but I'm a bit miffed by the LMGTFY link. I followed all the directions to a t and I never heard of the DigiLink license. Of course I would've googled that had I known that's what I needed or had any of the documentation I'd read mentioned it.
And doesn't matter anyway, I activated the DigiLink I/O license and it still only sees the Aggregate I/O and not my HD I/O.
So then I restarted and relaunched iLok mgr and logged in and then found that I could activate it.
And it STILL doesn't matter, it's still not seen.
Double check exactly what licenses show up on the iLok in ILM. Make sure only that one iLok is connected.

Reseat cards as already suggested. if that fails give us more info on your setup.

Maybe I had not had enough caffeine and was even more grumpy than usual but the lmgtfy comment was well maybe deserved. The magic here is knowing the term "digilink license". I was just totally lost how you could not find anything abou that.

This sloppy change by Avid just leaves me more convinced that there is nobody in Avid product management with a clue or who actually cares about customer experience. Like how about having the application pop up a message that there is Digilink interface detected but no license present and a link to find info on how to resolve this. Ditto with a non-HD license detecting the same. Meanwhile sample loops anyone?...
