Default Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive

If Pro Tools CPU usage is spiking on you and causing errors with playback on sessions that previously worked fine, the first thing I suggest is disabling Microsoft OneDrive.

A recent Windows update enabled OneDrive on my computer and caused the problems mentioned above. I couldn't find the problem and I went as far as formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows - but it didn't help at all! Then, when I disabled OneDrive everything immediately started working smoothly.

Thanks for the tip.
It's a good idea on Windows to turn off any background sync/transfer process, like automatic updates, One Drive, ...

On W10 Pro you can use Group Policy Editor to turn off OneDrive.

I simply uninstall Microsoft OneDrive. I use GoogleDrive instead - with no automatic syncing ever.

I'm using OneDrive all the time on my PT machine with zero problems (it's my daily backup "drive"), so while it's worth checking if you encounter a problem, it's not an "all-in-one" solution.

A side note, I find people (and Avid) to be a bit trigger happy with "disable everything" guidelines. It's not 2001 anymore and PCs/Macs are capable of running background tasks just fine.
