96k to 48k session conversion

Is there a way to convert a 96k session to either 48 or 44.1k, only changing the actual sample rate and maintaining the rest of the session intact? By this I mean, I'd like to keep plug ins/settings the same, but work at a lower sample rate so that I'm able to have more voices.

My First thought would be to start a new session at 48k then import the old session data in and let PT convert the files during import. In the prefs make sure the file conversion process is set to the highest quality.

This is probably the fastest way to do this. I am curious to hear other people's opinions.

A side note. I believe that converting down from 96k should only be made down to 48k because it is simple math. I would let a mastering house do the final 48k to 44.1 k for a smoother conversion.

I used to think that as well. What really happens during conversion is everything is upsampled to a common multiple, and then downsampled to the target samplerate. So as far as I can tell, converting from any sample rate to any other is a similar process with similar problems. The conversion process requires digital filtering and this is where the quality of the conversion is determined.

ProTools samplerate conversion is very good (in Tweakhead mode). If you are going for the ultimate in quality, you could consolidate all your audio from the top of the session and use Peak 5 to convert (very nice sounding conversion).

Go to Preferences and in the Editing tab select TweakHead in the Conversion Quality Options, then use "Save Copy In" from the File menu, and choose the sample rate you want to work.

to copy audio.

since it's an even multiple, it's a straightforward (every other sample)
downsample.

I hope your ready for a long back and forth as to why not. I would of thought so too but apparently it isnt the case.
