Default 15 or 17 inch New Macbook Pro?

I am buying the new MBP but which one??? I know that only the 17inch has the PCMCIA express port and that is necessary for UAD solo. However the UAD DUO unit looks pretty cool and the MBP 15 inch would it just fine.

So what advantages are there with the 17 inch MBP besides the express slot?

About 2 inches, one way or the other.

If you're using it to capture and then plan on working on another machine - go with the 15. If you plan on working extensively on the macbook - go for the 17. Realistically the only difference is the larger screen - but if you're using it a lot thats a BIG difference.

I use my MBP 15 to capture remote sessions - but I transfer those to my MacPro do work on.

I have a 15 but bought the large external monitor. It's wonderful.

However having the express card port is a big plus for future expansion. I got an ESATA card and a MADI card for mine.

Hope you dont mind me popping in your thread.. I too am planning on picking up a Macbook Pro and leaning towards the 15 ( will just add a cinema disply in the future) but my question leans towards what Hard drive.. are the SSDs good to go? I am already planning on an external firewire drive for my audio recordings....

Thanks
Dave

I've recorded 32 tracks @ 48K/24b without problem on the internal 7200rpm drive. As I said - I don't work/mix on the MBP - just capture live with it.

The express card is a consideration in the 17" (my 15" has one - stupid move by Apple taking it out of the 15). But most things can be done firewire these days.

Hey, just a follow up. I ordered my 17 MBP today! Antiglare, 7200rpm 500 GB drive, iWork, 8GB RAM 2.3 GHz Quad and applecare. just under 3100 usd.

I read that the 15" run every bit as hot as the 17 or hotter. THe Express card slot was another consideration as well the extra USB ( for my ilok)

Here is something probably none of you know about that I learned from Craig at Sunset Sound Studios CA. SSD drives besides have a 30% failure rate also break down due bad sectors from regular overwriting new info... Apparently after 3-5 years the SSD's break down. Your 256GB SSD might only have 100 GB of functionality after 3 years!

Not a big deal if a 256 drive was 100 bucks ( and it likely will in 5 years time) but at 500 usd! I'll pass

And Craig at Sunset Sound Studios based his statistics on what? His personal experience with SSD drives at the studio? Or does he have a list of everyone that as purchased an SSD drive?
Or perhaps more than likely he read that on a blog somewhere and passed it on to you as fact, without doing any real research on it, just as you are doing here.
