Default Advice on which version for smoothest operation

Hello all, I have a few questions regarding which version of PT I should get to give me the least amount of problems with my current computer. I have an imac 2011 2.8 i7 with 16gb and a 1tb hard drive. I would be using a saffire FireWire for my hardware.

I was looking into the protools 12 subscription which is 29.99 a month with an upgrade included. I am wondering for those of you running 12, how does it run with Yosemite bc this is the operating system I have installed at the moment.

I could also go the HD route and get protools 11HD from a good buddy as he has a spare license. Money aside which version would you choose. I don't have the need for all the extras of HD and I'm fearful that my computer will lag with HD due to the fact that it using more ram and processing power. Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated!

I haven't run PT11 HD (or any HD version so I can't comment on that). Running PT12 Native OS X 10.10.x without problems. I would recommend and external FW drive for audio though (SSD if you can), don't use the system drive for it.

I actually just ordered an external drive. Just trying to decide which PT to go with. Ready to start making music.

There is no difference in system requirements between regular PT and PT HD, the only difference is the feature set between the two.

As your system has i7 CPU and 16GB memory, it should run PT12 just fine.

HD has the potential to run smoother than non-HD, since you can set the level of caching it does. In some cases this doesn't matter, but in others it makes a huge difference. If given a choice between Pro Tools and Pro Tools HD, I would pick Pro Tools HD every time.

Of course, me too. I wouldn't settle for non-HD :)

If you have a path to get there, 12HD would be my suggestion.

That depends on how much RAM you have. With my 16 GB, I set the cache to 4 GB.
