Default Mbox 2 mini - no system sounds... driver problem?

Hello there fellow Pro Tools users! I've just become the proud owner of an Mbox 2 Mini with LE 7.4, and I'm glad to say that Pro Tools seems to be working absolutely fine. The problem is other sounds aren't coming out of my Mbox. Winamp and Media Player work fine too, but sound from web browsers doesn't. So no myspace music, no youtube sound... It seems like it's all the system stuff - no open-folder-clicks, nor startup/logoff noises, not even error noises or MSN Messenger jingles.

Driver problem? I've installed Pro Tools 7.3 twice, and just upgraded to 7.4. Always the same.

Mix knob is all the way up (like i said some things make sound anyway). in Sounds And Audio Devices, on the first tab 'Volume' it says "no device" and i can't adjust the volume there. that seems odd.

Hmmmm, ok, just tried playing the system sounds from the Sounds tab and when i do it says (for example, if i click windows startup tune) "Windows cannot play the %system root%\media\Windows XP Startup.wav file. It may be damaged or may not be a damaged sound file. Replace the file and try again."

right. now why the hell is that happening all of a sudden? bloody PCs, i need to save up & get a mac....

in the audio tab the Mbox 2 is my default playback device, but it can't be selected for Sound Recording, which seems odd.

Can't think of much else to say except i've got 1gb Ram, 2.17 GHz AMD processor, and ooh, last thing - in my devide manager, under that troublesome heading 'Other Devices' I now have Multimedia Audio Controller with one of those big yellow question marks with a big exclamation in front of it.

Exactly, Device Manager, you got it right - "?!????!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

thank you anyone and everyone.

You should start with the steps in the Win XP/ Pro Tools 6.x/7.x General Troubleshooting thread and post specific info on your system per the info on that thread if you're unable to resolve the problem.

You may also want to read the Wavedriver Usage Guide for WinXP.

That exclamation mark in the Device Manager could be part of the problem. I would probably recommend uninstalling Pro Tools, right-clicking on that device in the device manager and uninstalling it, then restarting and reinstalling Pro Tools.

First, it may be a good idea to post your Sandra report, so we can see if your system is even compatible with Pro Tools.
