Default pro tools and video--turning video into a quicktime movie?

this is probably a little more complicated than i think...
i'm new to working with video and p.t. together...
but how does one go about turning, say, video from a dvd (not quicktime) into something (like a quicktime file) that i can then import into a pro-tools session?
been looking through all the manuals, but maybe i'm looking in the wrong spot.
can anyone give me a real basic idea of what's involved with this?
i'm talking about just a dvd, which is only playable in, well, a dvd player. and it's not copy protected, it's something a friend made...
thanks...

First you need a program that can rip the DVD. DVDxDV is good for the home-made or studio-made variety, it does not work with commercial copy-protected DVDs though. Using that, you can convert from the DVD straight to a quicktime NTSC-DV .mov. Now, the file size of an uncompressed DV format movie may be larger than you'd think (about 5.5gb for 30 min) but the uncompressed DV format is actually the most compatible with ProTools and takes the least processing away from PT than some other codecs (like sorenson, motion JPEG or H.264), so you'd choose that "NTSC-DV" from DVDxDV's quicktime 'expert' video export settings and you'd have a file ready to import into ProTools.
