Default PT 2020 and Sierra - Will it work?

I'm fine at my home studio with 2020.3 and Mojave on a 2018 mac mini. I love track folders and would like to upgrade PT at the commercial studio I work with/for. They've got an old cheese grater running Sierra with 8 gigs RAM, 8 cores via dual CPU's (shows as 16 in PT) and upgraded to SSD SATA drive and might be able to upgrade the RAM if I can still get that old form factor. GPU isn't Metal compatible and it's hard to fine a replacement that is (except for used which we don't want to do).

So has anyone tried PT 2020.3 or 2020.5 on OSX Sierra? I've given up trying to find a link to download High Sierra from the apple app store which is why I'd like to keep them on Sierra if possible. With CoVid, I'd rather not go there in person and can do a PT upgrade via remote desktop but probably not an OS upgrade.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Oh, and if anyone can post a link for a Metal compatible video card that will work in one of those old cheese graters, that would increase our choices for software upgrades.

JFreak, YOU ROCK!!!!!

1000 times Thank You!!!!!

I just hope that link works on the cheese grater because it didn't work on my 2018 Mac Mini. Probably because the 2018 Mac Mini only supports Mojave and newer. I wanted to download it here as I've got faster Internet than the studio but if I've got to download it from the cheese grater running Sierra then that's what I'll do. Again, thank you for the link!!!!

I’m running 2020.5 on two rigs. A Sierra running cheese grater and Mac mini running Catalina and you wouldn’t know the difference. The video engine is more stable under Catalina but that’s about it.

I've been using High Sierra since it appeared, now using it with PT 2020.5, and it's incredibly stable apart from the occasional (usual!) PT error messages.

Using 2020.5 on a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra with 16GB RAM and it works fine. I'd be a little concerned about only 8GB RAM so you may be limited there unless you can add more.

That’s good enough for me. I’ll try 2020 with the existing Sierra and see how it goes. It’s an audio-only studio and will NEVER need video capabilities. I’ll try to talk the boss into going for 8 more gigs of RAM too. I wanted a good excuse to force that to happen anyway. Finding old style RAM will probably be easier than trying to find a Metal capable video card for that old puppy.

If I have issues after a RAM upgrade, I’ll upgrade to high sierra now that I’ve got a link.

THANKS for all your replies! I really appreciate it.

Is the 'Import Audio' feature sorted?

I've recently updated to High Sierra and PT 12.7.1 from a super stable Sierra running PT 12.5.2 (yes it's old, but so stable for me) and now I'm getting a really annoying error that I can't import audio, only drag and drop. This is because of High Sierra. I don't use drag and drop as it's severely limits my options.

Never had import issues. I know it's not the same as Import Audio but I've been using Import Session Data without a hitch. But I'm running Mojave with pt 2020.5. I have been experiencing several other issues with 2020.5. Nothing that caused a crash but little things not working when clicked. I should have documented them but was too busy mixing to swat bugs. Quitting and restarting seemed to help. I'll be working the rest of the week on the projects I was doing when experiencing issues. I'm sure it will be screwy again so I'll make note of what happened to report it.

Oh yeah, it was plugins not doing anything when instantiated. They passed audio as if they were bypassed or inactive but they weren't. The plugins showed no meter levels on input or output channels. Like Waves CLA-76 among others. I think the other one I had issues with was Brainworx bx_console SSL E and maybe Waves H-Delay. In one case, I removed the plugin, then put it back in and it worked the second time. Didn't seem to be the plugins, seemed to be a Pro Tools issue since it affected different brands of plugins. I do try to keep all plugins up to date so who knows.
