Field recording
I really don't want to take my G5 + monitor, 192 I/O, hard drives, keyboard + trackball, etc with me when recording elsewhere. So, I've found one solution, but I'm worried about the sound of this thing.
http://www.alesis.com/hd24 There's an option to upgrade the converters to the same as in the Masterlink, but again, I don't know how good this will sound. Does anyone use these today? Is the sound quality in the same area as a Yamaha 01V with the AES/EBU card installed, 'cause that unit is hardly used anymore. Thanks for any insight.

Re: Field recording
It's a great solution. I use mine all the time for multitrack field recording, and it is much easier than hauling PT around. I've used the stock A/D converters and been happy, and I've used my 01v96 as the A/D converter and connected to the HD24 via ADAT lightpipes.
Good luck! |

Re: Field recording
Thanks. The thing is that I can buy it for $900 now, and that's a good deal. Unless the sound quality sucks.

Re: Field recording
Let's say that I've recorded a song in the studio, and I want to take the HD24 with me to record drums elsewhere. I record a stereo mix or some stems to the HD24, and off we go. What's the easiest way to create a decent headphones mix for the drummer? Can I for instance route recorded tracks on the HD24 to whatever outputs I want, or are for instance inputs 1/2 locked to outputs 1/2? I'm thinking that if I record stems from PT to the HD24, it would be better if I could mix the stems the way the drummer wants it on location. Any additional thoughts?
Edit: Can I internally route tracks 1-8 to just a single stereo output pair on the HD24? Example: Vocals L/R on track 1/2, guitars and bass L/R on track 3/4, keys L/R on track 5/6 and sequenced drums on track 7/8. Can these 4 stems all be routed to output 1/2?
