Default CPU usage jumps to 100% when saving if edit window minimized

This is a strange bug that I've had ever since installing PTMP 8.0. It has persisted thru each CS update and continues with 8.0.1

This will happen even with a newly created blank session. If the edit window is minimized, and I attempt to save a session, the CPU usage will jump to near 100% (as displayed using Windows Process Explorer - the PT System Usage window does not display any overloads). The keyboard does not respond to commands in PT, and most menus are greyed out, besides File, Window and Help. In the File menu, only Exit is not disabled.

If I restore the Edit window by clicking on the restore window button on the window's title bar, the CPU load immediately drops back to normal, and normal function of the program resumes. If I close the edit window without restoring it, PT will have to be closed via the task manager. If I display a menu or click on a window title, the CPU usage will drop to normal, but will return to maxed out as soon as I release the widget.

This problem occurs when saving both to the local system drive and an external firewire drive.

I just installed quicktime and trashed my prefs.. no changes.

It's not a huge huge deal, i've learned to not minimize the edit window, but this bug really seems like it ought to be sorted out. I can't believe i'm the only one who has had this problem.

WinXP SP3, IE7 (occurred with IE6 as well). only RTAS plug ins i have are the included ones from digi design and some demo Massey plug ins. I also have the fxexpansion VST wrapper and a few free vsts wrapped.. but like i said, this occurs on a totally blank, newly created session.

if it helps the engineers find the problem, here's a snapshot of the thread stack. It's the Protools M-Powered.exe thread which has got the problem

Similar behavior, but mine "only" goes to 52%. Stays there till I un-minimize the window.

well i'm glad at least one other person has this issue.. it seems like the only common hardware we have is the delta 44. I imagine you only see you cpu jump to 50% because you have a dual core.. i bet one of the CPUs is maxed out

the weird thing is, even though the cpu meter says 100% usage, the computer responds normally when using other programs.. it's not as if the whole computer is bogged down.

Yeah - and I still think there are window "focus" issues. I still see larger than normal CPU usage when I do things like edit on the score etc. 20% jumps and that sort. Maybe something with the new graphics or???

I saw some threads awhile back talking about similar issues (window fucus and CPU)

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread...=249755&page=1
http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread...gh+cpu&page=43

But dont know if this is still on a list for fixes or is considered fixed with 8.01???

hmm yeah i wonder if it's part of a larger problem

I also just experienced.. if the program is in the bogged down state, and then you try to shut down the program with the session loaded, you have to kill the whole program via the task bar

anyone else with this problem? Can anyone at digidesign confirm it's a known problem.. or make it known if it's not? :)

Can someone let me know if this is known or something particular to us few?

it's definitely not fixed in 8.0.1 unfortunately it seems digi staff rarely visit this forum, or at least rarely reply to posts in this forum

Yeah - definitely in 8.01 for me

You and I both have NVIDIA graphics - wonder what an ATI would do? Have heard unconfirmed rumors about differences between ATI/NVIDEA but cant teel if that is old news, a guess, or ???

Indeed, Since this is, after all, a users forum.

If you need or expect direct technical assistance from Digidesign, you should contact them... directly.

For what it's worth, I do not have this problem with any of the 8.x versions, and I have the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT.
