Default Freezing tracks?

Hi

I need to save on CPU power I understand freezing tracks will help achieve this.

The thing is if I freeze the entire track with all the plug-ins on the track and/or freeze the aux track with plug-ins and I do a mix down.

Does this mean the plug-ins are frozen as well and so you don’t get the sound out of the plug-in?

Or is it once you freeze the track regardless what plug-ins you have on the track it’s sole purpose for saving on CPU and all the plug-ins you have on your track works just fine?

Also if you have done automation will this change while frozen or work regardless?
Please advise?

Thank you
.

I would recommend including the following workflow, whatever else you do to the tracks!!!

When you wish to freeze/commit/render the track (commit being a good choice for current functions and right click terminology):

1. First right-click a track and choose "Duplicate".
2. Right-click one copy and choose "Hide and Make Inactive". (It's a backup you can make active, if needed).
3. Right-click the remaining track and choose "Commit". (Frees up resources hidden in the inactive track).

If needed, you activate the track again (it's in the track list, with italics) and you can access and edit all plug-in controls again.

If automation is committed, you cannot edit it without using a backup track. You can "unfreeze" a "frozen" track and edit, but I think the commit function is preferred for smoothest performance, along with reverting to hidden/inactive tracks instead of unfreezing.. I think you might freeze/unfreeze for a while with good result, and commit when you really do need to free up resources, and you are actually "committed" to the sound.

You really should spend some time to play and learn. The Pro Tools reference guide section on this is well written.

Devils and angels are in the details.

An aux doing what? Freezing auxes works as well as could be imagined, it's all nicely implemented. It can only or course freeze an aux where it's fed from pre-recorded content. (A minor complaint but they should have greyed out the freeze icon when it's not an option, vs barfing up an error when you accidentally click on it and there is no content).

What automation? Volume automation can be written over a frozen track, plugin automation nope, that's frozen in the track. You need to unfreeze.
