With a metal GPU, the 5,1 is officially supported by Apple for Mojave.

I am personally running 11.6 with OpenCore with a metal GPU and a newer WIFI/Bluetooth card using Open Core.

No problems here with unsupported systems

1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 12 Core on High Sierra Nvidia GT630
1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 6 Core on High Sierra Nvidia GT630
1 PT Ultimate 2021.7 12 Core on Mojave Nvidia GT630

The High Sierra Systems run better than Mojave
I am waiting for new Prozessor M2? Macs with more Ram and Monitor Options.

Obsidian, your posts have certainly helped me over the years!

The MSI Gaming RX 560 4GB card is running well for me on OS 10.14.6, and Pro Tools Ultimate 2021.7 with my HDx 12-core 5,1 Cheesegrater Mac Pro.

I picked it up on eBay for $100 shipped on a Buy it Now.

The MSI is nice because it doesn't need an additional power connector!

You'll also see the 2GB model and the bigger MSI RX580 (which I *believe* needs TWO power connectors - Some RX580s need 1 8-pin power and others need 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin, depending on watts).

Also, read the Mac Pro video card thread, because the XFX Radeon cards do not work in the cMP. I also think the ASUS and Gigabyte are not compatible.

Here is the cMP GPU thread to double check.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...r-cmp.2174600/

Currently on eBay, I see one for 159 plus 20 shipping from a 100% seller, FWIW and another ending in 18 hours, currently at 95.

I dig that Mojave can still run the 32 bit code. Catalina is a bridge too far for my needs on the old cMP. YMMV Good Luck! :)

PS: Open Core seems cool, but I'm just on Vanilla 10.14.6 with the Metal GPU for my HDx rig.

PS2: Can run 2 big monitors + a TV. My card specs are below, they also have a LP Low Profile model, FWIW

Sorry not read all thread but just to say I'm running 2021 in the studio on this computer

http://duc.avid.com/attachment.php?a...1&d=1634291348

and it's all good. That is to say, any issues I have are invariably replicated on my (much newer) laptop so it's not computer dependent.

This Mac Pro is probably the finest computer I will ever own in my lifetime, at least in terms of longevity.

Obsidian, happy to help! :)

The main 'show-stoppers' I've encountered on the cMP are:

#1. AVX / AVX2 Instruction Set requirements on some software, like NI's Massive X and IK's Modo Drum.

#2 Bluetooth 2.1 vs. EDR and BLE Bluetooth specifications.

You'll see a lot of workarounds on MacRumors cMP threads that are fairly complicated to implement (remove bluetooth or wifi/bluetooth card etc.)

However, CME is releasing the WIDI Bud Pro USB dongle that will give you 5.0 Bluetooth and allow use of the Korg MicroKey Air and other Bluetooth devices. Waiting to find out if I have to unplug my current Bluetooth Card OR if I can just run a KEXT. It is set to arrive in a few weeks, we'll see!

I may also be able to set a bluetooth preference with Xcode 11.4's Additional Tools utility, Bluetooth Explorer. It is not in Xcode 12 and higher, btw. Some people have reported this to work with generic Bluetooth USB dongles from Amazon etc., but I haven't tried it.

Apple seems to be 'closing the door' to some Bluetooth manufacturers in Big Sur and higher (according to one commenter whom I read :)

Love the old cMP.

Alex on Rumors turned me on to this card. Unfortunately it will eat up a PCI slot.

Love the old cMP.
I upgraded my cMP 5,1 WIFI to 802.11ac and Bluetooth to 4.0 with this card. VERY easy plug and play installation. Both WIFI and Bluetooth are natively supported in Big Sur 11.6.
