Question Slight cut results in a clip?

I'm baffled: On one track, if I add eq (digi's EQ III) and cut a little bit at 2khz it clips. Why would a cut result in a clip? Needless to say, if I flatten the eq, boosting those freqs back, it *doesn't* clip. What could be going on? Anyone have any ideas?

Probably inter - sample clipping, better use other EQ or bring the input level down, put the trim plug before EQ and bring down the level so it peaks at -12 dbs.
