Default 2021 and still no sidechain latency compensation..

Hey,

I'm a little confused as to why there aren't more PT users complaining about the fact that you need HDX hardware in order to actually get sidechain latency compensation. It's truly crazy to me how this hasn't been fixed by now..

For example, I usually run into this issue when I use Universal Audio plugins (which introduce tons of latency) in a session and sidechain various instruments against the kick drum. The sidechaining won't be "in sync" with the kick/tempo, it will sound horrible. So I have to freeze the latent tracks (and unfreeze to make changes) if I want to actually hear the mix. It's a mess.

I'm sorry for the rant but I just can't believe that this is still a thing in 2021. AFAIK most (if not all) of the other DAWs have no problem with delay compensation for sidechaining.

If anyone has a SOLID work-around that they can recommend, I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Felix

Hi,

I don't know if this may help you but I use the Sweetsonics Laser sidechain compressor. ( sweetsonics.com )

In the plugin you can easily adjust + and - of the detection.

From their site:

"The offset control moves reduction and boost envelopes in the time domain. It can be used both ways – as pre-open (-) or as delay (+). Look-forward and latency is added automatically."

I don't know if this can help you but check it out?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried a similar sidechain plugin previously and it didn't work, but this one might be different. I'll check it out, thanks :)

I've never seen a single UAD plugin with an external bus side-chain input.
I always thought that this was a design limitation of UAD, since it's long been a highly-requested addition.
(see https://uadforum.com/general-discuss...sidechain.html)

Care to share which one ?

I see what you mean and you're right but I should clarify something.

The UAD plugins that I mentioned are not doing any sidechaining. The sidechaining is done with a FF Pro-C 2 or something like that.

I meant that the UAD plugins are just being used in the session on various tracks, which introduces latency that "surrounding" tracks have to compensate for. The problem is: the signal that is being sent to the sidechaining compressor is NOT compensating for this latency, so it gets all messed up

It's a MAJOR problem that they need to fix. Also for those who use sends for parallel compression, you have phase issues and most people don't even realize it.

why do you call it Sidechain Delay comp ?

I believe that the ADC is not working until today in Pro Tools unlike Logic for example

if I have few instruments tracks with let's say UAD plugins on them and some other audio tracks .... everything will be a complete mess

Yes, it's a shame. No, I don't expect any movement on this soon, or even this year. I've banked a reinstatement code and will let my current license plan lapse until this is addressed. There isn't a single feature or bug fix coming down the pipe that's more important to my work these days so unless they get on it I'm done paying dues.
