Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
ok... ok... I know someone is immediately going to pipe in that it's "not supported." Great. Whatever. I accept that. I just want to know if it works.
So has anyone tried PT on one of those new mini-laptops? They come with an Intel Atom processor and 512Mb Ram. They run XP and have flash memory drives (two separate drives). I spend two hours a day on a train and would love a mini-setup (smaller than my current full-size laptop) to tinker with drum programming and midi programming. And they're so darn CUTE!!! |

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
I dont know the reply on this ,but PT needs a QUALIFIED cpu to run.
I believe that Atom isnt qualified. I also have serious doubts about the hard disk controller in these devices of any brand, for use with PT8 |

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
I don't know about the processors but I'm pretty sure that PT LE8 requires at least 1GB of RAM and will not install if the system does not meet this requirement. I don't know if you can easily upgrade the RAM in these netbooks.

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
from what i've read, an atom is considerably slower than a celeron running at nearly half the speed! i don't have high hopes for pt running at any useful level on one, which is a shame since the size and battery life of those things is otherwise nice!

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
The Cpu power will most likely be a serious issue, but that said, when I asked around whether or not the 12" Ultraportable IBM X31 would run, I was fed the same scoffs about the processor being inferior and lack of this and that making it not run.
You know what? I've been running them on the ultraportable line ever since. Without a hitch, BETTER than most laptops and OFF the system drive to boot. That said again, there's a HUGE difference between an Ultraportable Thinkpad and an Atom Processor Netbook. At $299 though +/-, its worth a try . . .

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
I found a site where someone claims to have PT 7.4 working on an Atom processor Asus Eee.
Look in the comments posted to the following article: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/0...-3-linux-tips/ Think it's for real? |

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
I believe this statement is not true but purely the stock answer you get from Digi. Maybe they should change their replies to "Qualified" or "Not Tested." In fact, I'll bet they are at least a year behind testing laptops. I'm running 7.4 on a AMD Turion laptop, and ver 8 on an AMD 4,000 + PC, neither have been tested theirfor not qualified, however both are running excellent! If you want to save yourself some greef follow Digi's gidelines, if you feel like living on the edge, experiment!

I believe local DUCer MattP has done so successfully. He might chime in with an update.

Re: Anyone tried PT8 on a new mini-laptop with Atom processor?
Hello,
I have PT 8 loaded onto an Asus n10. 1.6 atom, 2 gigs of ram, vista. It installed no problem, and starts no problem. I loaded band practice into it, 1 hour stereo wav. , to edit. Many, many errors. Never crashed, but I wouldn't call it "working". I did finish editing the session and bouncing out 5 minutes of stuff we might use, but I was determined. One thing I couldn't figure out was "1 processor" was greyed out forcing me to use "2 processors". XP or 7 might get you further, but since I never intended this to be a DAW I haven't tried. Hope that helps. Tom |
