Default up grading from 1680 to g4 and pt5

im about to upgrade from and 1680 to a mac
g4 with an audiomedia III and PTLE. I want
to get my files from the 1680 into my mac.
does anyone know if i can burn a data backup off my 1680 and load it into protools? or will i have to wait and get a digi001 and do it eight tracks at a time?

The Roland VS series stores data in a proprietary Roland format that is not able to be read by any other software applications. You cannot transfer the files directly, but would have to re-record the audio.

Incidentally, how do you plan to send 8 simultaneous tracks from the VS1680 to the Digi001? The VS1680 has no ADAT optical.

Not sure on this, but I believe the Roland audio files are their own format, which would mean you wouldn't be able to do that. If you get the Digi, you could actually sync your 1680 to it thru MTC and take it in 2 tracks at a time thru the digital outs of the 1680, and the tracks would be synced...this is what I would do/have done.
Good luck!

1680 has 8 analog outputs

You could transfer 8 at once... but does the Audio Media III have 8 ins?

Now do you see the mess you've created, Roland?

If you want to keep your 1680 stuff in the digital domain, the 1680 has spdif out which you could dump into a Motu 2408mkll or an Motu 828 and then into Protools which is what I have done. You would need 2 computers to do this. I have all three systems in my studio and this is the only way I know to transfer the files without re-recording through the analog outs. If you don't want to spend a lot of time screwing around then do it through the analog outs and sync the 1680 to PT. You might want to hold on the the 1680 just for the Roland Effects in that unit which are about as good as any thing out there. To get the same quality of effects comparable to the 1680 you would have to spend a heck of a lot of money on either plug-ins or outboard gear.

I own a Roland 1680, and Digi 001. How do I set up the 1680 as an external effects unit. (Please be specific) Thanks.

There are two ways that come to mind. One is to use the SPDIF digital send & receive so that the signal stays digital all the way thru the VS & back. Unfortunatly that limits the number of ins & outs because the SPDIF is only two channel.

The other is to use the analog outs from the Digi into the analog ins of the VS. then processing in real time in the VS by creating a song & adding the desired FX as inserts into the inputs then routing them back out the direct outputs. It works ok if you need a lot of FX, but the extra D/A & A/D adds noise & does color the sound.

If you're just needing a good lush sounding 24 bit reverb off the VS I'd say use the Spdif connections.

Also there are some tastee guitar amp simulator patches in the VS's bag of trix that are worth checking out. Those type of FX are a little harder to find as plugins for RTAS.

I'd be happy to pass on more details in private E or here on the Duc, feel free to E me at [email protected]

I think there are quite a few of us here that crossed over from VS 1680 to Digi001 & protools.
