Which EQ presets to use for instruments not mentioned in EQ3 7-Band
Hey guys!
Im using EQ3 7-Band plugin. I Like the way the presets are defined by categories of instruments such as Bass Guitar, Hi-hat, Snare etc. Question: For instruments that don't have defined categories in this plugin such as "Timpani" for ex, I was wondering if there's a list somewhere that i can refer to so i could know which categories of presets would be the most appropriate to use? Thanks in advance! |

Why dont you learn by trying? There is no ”list” for that and you need to use your ears! Presets are just a starting point which we never use anyway.

What an unhelpful and patronizing reply. Many people use presets and find them good working tools.

Re: Which EQ presets to use for instruments not mentioned in EQ3 7-Band
Understood, however, I am actually still a beginner, never pretended to be a pro. I'd like to trust my ears but for that i need a base and a reference for these particular instruments. For Kick and snares, I'm pretty sure I could now tweak them without necessarily using presets since using presets at first gave me the idea of what my drums should sound like and how I like them. I was basically trying to do the same with other instruments such as Timpani.

I am learning too but a good advice I can give you I think it is to consider balancing all the instruments before using EQ, this is done using just the volume faders. Once you have a good balance and all the instruments are at the level you want them to be you will hear more easily which ones need what. There are EQ movements that are usually done to clean up the mix from unnecessary noises like using the high pass filter, then you can use this to discover frequencies that need correction either if it's boosting or reducing them, hope it helps:
https://youtu.be/yLOM2pSSB3c The downside of using presets is that two people can eq a track in radically opposite ways based on what they want to achieve. You need to learn to create your own equalizations so at some point you have to close your eyes and start making movements based on your taste rather than in someone else's theory.

Re: Which EQ presets to use for instruments not mentioned in EQ3 7-Band
Hey Kdose,
you could try referring to a chart like this.. It'll help you to see the frequency relationship between instruments that you might be used to equalising and those you aren't. Regarding Timpani.. I'd suggest looking at Tom presets as a good starting place. With percussive instruments rather than just think about its tonal characteristics consider also what part of its envelope needs enhancing. In the case of timpani you might want to use compression or transient enhancement to bring out is attack portion for dramatic effect or use different settings to enhance the ringing of its sustain portion.

Re: Which EQ presets to use for instruments not mentioned in EQ3 7-Band
Presets are designed as a starting place...... And If ya don't change to taste your not learning.... And if your not learning anything what's the sense of doing this.... I am still working after 27 years, Do you think it's because I use stock sounds on stock eqs, No uts because I've learned what tk do in every situation.... And if J don't know J figure it out, And all of us in here can say that's the beauty of what we do.... We are creating Sound for people's lives, All the songs you love were not just apply a stock EQ and walk away.. Every sound within the song was crafted and carved to make it sit perfectly.... I suggest you grab a knob and twist it till it sounds great.....
