touch vs latch, why and when?
Hello everybody, hope you are having a great time
I'm about to ask the stupidest question in the history of the DUC, but here it goes I understand the diference in concept about touch and latch on the Icon, also understand Join and Auto Join, my question to you fellows Iconers, would be, in principle, why would you choose one over the other? Im trying to grasp the one thing that would make one better than the other, and I cant seem to find why I couldnt stay on touch for ever Thanks in advance

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
You can, provided you are ok with holding your finger on the fader/encoder. I use Latch way more often myself. This way I can grab stuff, set it where I want it, listen, do other things, then hit the Automatch button to exit writing when I need to.

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
Good point, I guess I was used to setup an "initial" mix , write thos initial levels and the do touch ups on TOUCH mode, with writing to end or from the start
But seeing it from your point of view, your system looks like I can acomplicj the same thing with less clicks and less oportunities to distractions Thanks

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
When making a really fast and rough mix for a client to approve edits, etc., latch in auto-join mode is great. And what's even better is to do it while in re-record. FAST.

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
Latch prime in stop + preview mode does it for me. I use touch for just that - touching up the mix, or ride the send fader feeding delays for the odd word/phrase.

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
reminds me of a great visual explanation I saw Mr. Danny Caccavo give when asked about latch vs touch.
Hilariously funny !!!! ...... Danny was the product manager for the PT 7.2 release btw . Or was it 7.4 that did the BIG automation overhaul ? Can't remember. Either way ... we owe Mr Caccavo A LOT for the way automation in PT and on these controllers works now. Anyways ... Without a controller latch doesn't make much sense. With a controller however latch (in combination with automatch / join / autojoin) makes way more sense and allows you to work MUCH faster then with touch. Add latch prime and the various write and autowrite to commands, for which the warnings can be suppressed as a pref and the capture / punch / preview combinations etc and you suddenly realize that you sit behind one big kick rear end mixing system. Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
DHG: Real men use ALL the modes. Except write. Which I don't use because it terrifies me.

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
This has to be the funniest post I ever read
Anyway, I guess I didn't do the tramsition from Analog to digital the right way I would set a rought mix, set everybody on write and play from beginning to end, and from there use touch to ride whatever the mix called for However Im seeing the other side of the force, by listening to the way that you guys are working and it makes so much sense that it makes me mad I didnt figure it out on my own Guess thats what a breakthrough is all about

Re: touch vs latch, why and when?
Most of the time I set up a rough mix with no specific mode engaged (ie. all on Read). That way I can just put everything where I feel and then change my mind 1,000 times as you do continuously as things push and pull against each other.
After that the combination of latch prime in stop and Latch using Preview mode is just the most powerful thing out there. All the Touch stuff comes at the end to create drama or make things absolutely sit still. (I'm talking about music mixing here and not TV/movie audio).
