It is bad enough that there is Standard and Ultimate version, I myself have never understood the First concept. Back in the day when there was PT Free, things were different.

No, in my opinion trial for PT serves nicely for trying out PT. More and more Ultimate features are dropping into Standard, but for the foreseeable future the Standard/Ultimate divider is stereo and greater-than-stereo.

Well... When I was auditioning various DAWs for my own use, I tried Ableton Lite, Pro Tools - First, and Reaper. For a variety of reasons, I was attracted to Pro Tools and I eventually bought it and ditched the "First".


If First had not existed, I am not sure if I would have become a Pro Tools user. It doesn't bother me at all that it is gone, but it may affect future users. Interesting business decision. Not good or bad IMO.

I think I'm with you - just having a 30 day trial seems a good idea.

I disagree that the big dividing line for PT is purely stereo vs multichannel, though that's a factor - it's also Post vs Music. Although vanilla can now import AAF (I think?) it doesn't have field recorder and can't support more than 1 video track. It's depressingly rare to only have 1 video track in post as successive cuts come in.
