Default 002 Mic Preamps vs. Mackie VLZ XDR Preamps

Does anyone have any information about how the four new preamps in the 002 compare to the preamps in a Mackie 1604VLZ board with the XDR preamps?

Also, the pictures of the back of the 002 seems to show alot of ventilation holes... Is anyone concerned about possible fan noise -- or even noise from the moving faders for those of us who are in single room recording situations...

Greetings!

The preamp issue is also being discussed in this forum but here are some clues....

Quote:
The pres in the Digi002 are actually very similar to the pres in The PRE, though not specifically the same. They are much better than previous preamps made by Digidesign.

The converters on the Digi002 are actually better than the Previous 888io24, though probably not quite as good as the 96io. They are far better than the converters in the Digi001.

I do know that the Digi Pre is an excellent product. The Mackie XDR Pro pres are also very good. As to which are better, well, that's often quite subjective but in this case I'd be happier if I woke up on Christmas day with a Digi Pre in my stocking rather than the 1604.

YMMV of course.

Now, fan noise... great point! Some products are simply too noisy, let's face it. Maybe the holes are for non-fan ventillation? Let's hope so.

Best regards,

i'm sure the faders are not silent, but probably not too audible unless moving from full up to full down as when scrolling through tracks or banks.

I can understand the concern....i heard a yamaha 02r....and that isnt quiet...

If you want some comparison:

download the 002 datasheet
download the mackie datasheet
compare.

We can not say how something sounds that noone can buy...

Ja ja Bastiaan ek weet!

I remember with the Procontrol there was an audible click if there was a very sudden dropoff.I also remember the pleasing hum if you ran the fader tests...hehehe.Other than that they were whisper quiet, and if the 002 is anything like that,it wont be a problem.

The 002 is very quiet. No fan noise.

The faders make a bit of noise when they move, but not very much. (If you make fast/extreme level changes, say from -INF to +6, you may hear the fader hit the travel stop at the top or bottom).
