Is it worth it. A sales guy told me that a g5 is 4 times faster than the top of the line g4. Is that true.?

I don't quite understand your question....if your comitted to the 001 then the G5 could be a 100 times faster and you still could not use one (001 is not compatible with G5 ..and never will be..its a simple hardware issue).....I think your question has already been answered.....

Why the condescending tone? I know that the 001 is not compatible. I am asking, is it worth upgrading to the 002 and a g5? Is there that much of a difference in the g4 1.42 gig dual or a g5 dual processor. I already have an apogee convertor and a mic pre so I really don't need an 002 except if I am going to a G 5

I would get a dual 1 or 1.25 or 1.42 and stay with the 001. There has been a lot of power harness problems posted, and often the problem comes back. If you need the phantom power for your mics, the on off button is on the back of the unit. It has also been posted that the PCI connection is better than firewire. I would not be surprised if the 002 was replaced with a 003? this year.

I agree with rgriff. I still have an 001 but in my case it has some advantages.

I have a dual 1.25 G4. It is capable of dual-booting into OS9 or OSX. I run PTLE 6.4 and 5.1.1 depending on my start-up. Although 6.4 seems to run fairly well, it is in no way the bullet-proof, never crash or mess up system that I have in OS9. I also take a big hit in track/plug count when running 6.4. Further, I have access to many plug-ins that I couldn't afford to upgrade to OSX versions. So, unless there is a particular reason (client wants it) for me to use 6.4 in my work, I usually opt for the older, less slick, but oh so much more stable and powerful, IMHO, 5.1.1.

As far as the hardware goes, I long ago invested in great converters, mic pres, and mics and think that the front end of my rig is about as good as it gets. My 001 serves only as a dongle to launch the software and to patch in a nice Lexicon reverb and a couple 1176's. I would use this gear even if I bought an 002R and so I wouldn't gain anything by upgrading except 96k.

I know that it is inevitable that I will have to upgrade. Software support for the 001 is gone and computers don't live forever. However, this system should hold me for a few years yet. I am getting the sound I want, spending all my time working on music instead of problems, and people are still paying me for it.

For me this is the best of both worlds.

Regards.

for a 001 system. find yourself an old 400mhz G4 and upgrade with your processor of choice.. in total it would cost you about 1000 bucks and it'll be pretty fast.
