Question Anyone using SSD's in your rigs ?

Anyone using SSD's (Solid State Drives) as their apps boot up drives ... any thoughts ? speed increases ? lack of TRIM support a problem.... anyone using large SSD's for any sample playback ? I'm thinking about dropping in an SSD in my PT tower & also my portable LE laptop to improve overall performance....
What's big session load up times with an SSD apps drive like .. Anyone ?

Any comments good or bad ? brands to use or not use ?
Cheers Tom...

Just made a thread about using SSD's in recording rigs.

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=276934

you might want to consider it, since mine failed after just 8 months.

Just a quick thought: I'm fairly sure that using SSDs is completely unsupported by Avid, so if something goes wrong, you'll probably be on your own.

I installed a SSD (Mtron 3035 SLC 64GB) as systemdrive in my MacPro (2,66 Woodcrest) 10 months ago, and I could not be happier. Startup as well as programm start is really fast.

I read a bit about the pros and cons before and bought the mtron slc at 50% price, when an electronic reseller sold out the "old series". As audiodrive it's too pricy for me, having needs for TBs SSDs are not really worth considering ;-)

Keep the startup drive clean and lean, that around twice of your RAM is free space on the drive (for memory swapping) (I don't know exactly, how much the system needs, but this is my personal rule of thumb).

Greetings,
Matthias

Just for the hell of it, I installed a SSD drive onto my old Macbook. (first gen) after the second internal HD failure in 4+ years.
Then I needed a mobile set-up for a quick recording session at the school where I work.
INstalled M-Powered 8.0.3 on the SSD (40gb Intel), brought it and a Fast Track USB + iLook. Recorded everything directly to system drive, and it ran better then the macbook ever did with internal SATA boot drive + Firewire audio drive.

IN other words, a good experience for me.

Been running SSD both as system drive and audio drive just fine for nearly 8 months now on W7 64 bit Ultimate.
Se my profile to brand and model.

There is a night and day difference in boot and program startup time compared to regular SATA. PT runs much smoother.

Go for it.
