Default 003 Console & Rack

Hi Guys,

I have what will seem like a stupid question. I'm about to pull the trigger on picking up an 003 console. I already have an 003R+.

I want to keep the rack purely to allow for mobility, I keep it in a rack with most of my outboard. I keep it all connected through my patchbay also. With this set up, I can close up the rack and take it with me if i'm doing a session outwith my own studio.

Could I run the console when at home as a master and slave the 003R+ via TOS link?

I know it's daft, but I want to utilise the onboard surface of the console, but keep everything as is in my rack.

Cheers,
Niall.

Sounds like you should looking to add a control surface instead of a an entire PT interface.

I don't think the 003's do standalone mode (they need to be connected to firewire). So no, I don't think that will work.

No, it won't work. If you need to be portable, I second the recommendation to skip the 003 controller. Get an Artist Mix or maybe the new Behringer X-Touch(which looks to be very cool), keep the 003rack and add an 8 channel lightpipe preamp to give you 16 inputs in 3 rack spaces

Gents, SKI, Joel, Albee,

Thanks for that. I assumed as much, but wanted to check.

The artist series does look pretty tidy, and will no doubt benefit me. But... it's a bit rich for my blood at the moment.

I'll definitely keep and eye out on feebay and gumtree.

I will research it, but how does the signal path travel to the surface? Direct from the DAWsystem (FW/USB/TB), or via the interface?

With regards to a the preamp, how does everyone feel about the octopre's these days?

"how does the signal path travel to the surface? Direct from the DAWsystem (FW/USB/TB), or via the interface?" Which surface? 003 works with firewire only. Artist Mix uses ethernet. And, while its dirt simple, the Presonus Faderport is a handy little box

As for the OctoPre Mk II, I think it sounds fine. I have the Dynamic version feeding the 8 analog inputs of my 003. It handles most of my drums, Egtr and scratch vocal. My "money" channels all come in over the lightpipe input(but I have a high-end box for that).

A control surface is just control, the audio doesn't go through it.
The audio would route the same as normally.
The purpose would be that it would give you the abilities that the 003 Console has over the 003/003+ Rack.

Also when I recommended a control surface, the Artist stuff would be pretty much my last recommendation.
