Default PT's LE V8 on single core G5

Hi all,

My assistant is running a single core, 2 Ghz G5 powermac (model ref Powermac 7.3) with 6 GB RAM, OS 10.4.10 and Pt's LE 7.4 with a 002. He is only really responsible for track lays, dialog editing and a bit of sound design so its not real heavy duty stuff. My question is will Pt's 8 bring the machine to its knees? Obviously it will need Leopard installed first

Any one using a similar set up?
D

My understanding is that a PowerPC Mac cannot be updated higher than Tiger. Digidesign's own compatibility grid appears to confirm this... If I'm wrong, I'm going to be a bit upset with a few people, myself.

A G5 will run Leopard 10.5.8 which is the last OS for PPC. I have 2 PowerMac G5s running PT8 without any issues.

As long as you're not using any VIs, the G5 is respectable. I also have PT8 running on a G4 Powerbook with decent performance (sans VIs and demanding plugs of course). PPCs definitely run Leopard - 10.5.8 on both machines.

Thanks lads - yeh powerpc's aren't quite dead yet until Snow Leopard totally takes over (which i can't really see happening...). The hardest plugin is probably TL space which will only be 1 or 2 instances, and maybe the video track with DV toolkit. Everything else is pure editing.

Did consider seeing if OWC do any processor upgrade (would feel happier with a 2nd core) but there isn't any available - will give it a shot and see how we go

As stated the PPC's are still viable machines and TL Space is nothing to worry about because it has very low overhead. It's the VI's that are the killers.
