Default HD Analog I/0 16 built in optical ports

I just got a HD Native card and an I/O Analog 16.
I was under the impression that the additional built in optical ports and spdif are actually additional to the 16 analog ports... In other words I was hoping to use the 16 i/o's for summing and then go out optical (adat) to my apollo twin for monitoring... now it seems that the total is 16 channels so I can replace for example 15/16 with 1/2 optical, which means I am 2 channels short for what I had planned...
Is that correct or is there a way to actually use the 16 analog outs + the additional adat ports 1 to 8?

Please let me know

Thanks

The HD I/O box is 16 paths, in your case that is 16 analog in and out
Now you can mult output paths so say analog 1/2 is also the AES/SPDIF on the chassis or you can put the optical ports into ADAT mode for more digital paths
You can sub an analog pair for a digital pair of the inputs if you need to

If you have some rack space, a used 192 IO will expand your setup nicely for a relative bargain

if you do get a 192, it needs the Digital card to sync with the HD I/O and you may have to update the firmware

Actually a "great" option. Before you buy, be aware of the different versions of 192 that are on the market. The 192 digital is strictly digital(meaning you need analog>digital hardware to use it). The "standard" 192 is 8 analog IO and 8 digital IO(with an expansion slot to add 8 more analog ins, or outs, but not both). And a warning to be careful as there are people selling 192 chassis with no cards(they don't work at all without at least 1 digital card) so you don't buy one of those, thinking its all you need. That's my understanding anyway

AFAIK, there must be 2 working cards in slots 1-3 and slot 4 is totally optional. If you have analog in and out in slots 1-2 without digital card, it should work standalone, but cannot sync to other boxes.
