Default Pro Tool 11 and OS Cloning

Hope I am asking this in the right spot. I have a 27" iMac, i7, 32gb of RAM running PT 11, got my sessions and samples each on different external drives and Pro Tools in the main drive where the Mac OS is, which is where all the applications run from. Still running Yosemite.

I want to replace my main drive, which is a HDD to Samsung Evo 850 1gb SSD. What is everyone's experience who has done this.. what is your experience cloning your desktop to move over to an SSD?

Thanks!

No issues at all. That's the nice thing with Disk Images, they are just one file that reflects your disk, byte-for-byte.

I've done disk images of my drives for many years, and restored them many, many, times (usually after trying out failing updates), without ever having a problem. Licences, authorizations and all. And much faster than regular file-backups.

You make a disk image to another drive, install your SSD, format if nessecary, and restore all the data from the disk image.

I know CarbonCopyCloner is the app everybody around here says you need for this, but I use Apples Disk Utilities (comes w/every mac) and it creates perfect disk images, clones.

(Of course, you'll have to be focused when you use Disk Utilities, as one of its many functions is formatting, erasing disks.)

IHTH.

also, be aware that the Samsung SSD's include a disk with some utilities, and one is called Data Migration. I just used that to clone my OS drive(on a Windows machine) and it performed flawlessly

On Mac, Avid in the past has recommended SuperDuper.

On Windows, I highly recommend Macrium Reflect.

As much as I like Reflect, I have moved to AOMEI Backupper Pro. There is a free version of this that works fine, but the Pro version includes a feature that clones system drives better(better because it correctly clones the registry, while the free version seems to cause some minor issues, for me anyway)

I did want to warn users of the Samsung Data Migration utility. It(on Windows) will install Samsung Magician(whether you want it or not) and on some Windows machines, the Magician software will cause USB drives to not be found(like my pendrive that holds all my Waves licences). Simpy uninstall Magician and all is well

Something I like CCC for is to make backups for my session drives - svaes having to figure out what changed and what didn't. And don't forget the Safety Net that CCC has so if the drive you're cloning to has the space it will save older versions of the changes in your backups should you need to go back more than one generation.
