Default Bounce To Disc

I never believed that bounce to disc was different than recording to tracks until tonight. The BTD files are much dryer than the record to disc tracks. It is unmistakable and not just me tripping. I'm rerecording everything. Not because I want to spend and extra 3 hours either. I don't really care how mathmatically identical they are supposed to be. They are not.

Live and learn, I suppose.

What does the phase test say?

A good while back, someone had another comparison on this, and had some technical explanation why this is so. I can't remember now what the reasons were. Does anyone else remember that thread?

Dryer? Could you elaborate?

BTD sacrifices automation to keep the buffer from under-running

For MOST music a phase test does not work. If you have enigma, mondo mod, or anything close to that that mix plays back differently every time. So doing a phase test is slightly pointless.

For years now I have been saying RTD over BTD. If you record to disc, the mix will be recorded just as you are hearing it. There is no guesswork involved with the sound. The reverbs, the delays everything tracks better on the RTD vs. BTD.

The more "math" you introduce into PT mixer the less likely you are to like what you hear.

Try the RTD test. Make a new audio track (next to your master track). Assign all of your outputs that are out 1 and 2 to busses (all but the new audio track), say buss 31 and 32. Including the buss master. Make the audio track you just created an input of 31 and 32 and the output is the master 1 and 2. Record to disc. There is less math in this than sending it to another Aux and then the Aux to an audio track. Do this test on your next mix and see if it doesn't work MUCH better sonically for you.

I always RTD. Sounds better to me. Don't forget to mute your outputs!

I agree with Tony...another added plus that I couldn't mix with out, is with RTD, you can actually scroll through and monitor your session, double check metering, etc.; to me the whole display freeze when BTD makes BTD useless for printing a mix.

So how exactly do you route the mixer when you guys RTD? Assign all the track outputs to the input of an aux return, then assign the output of the aux track to another audio track, then what?

Record the mix to the stereo audio track, and export it. Done.
