Default HELP w/ dbx 386 preamp into 001 spdif input

I just picked up a dbx 386 preamp today. And i whant to make sure all my connections and stuff is right. Ok, im using a spdif cable from the dbx's digital output into spdif input on digi 001.
hardware setup: what SHOULD the 001 clock be set to? I recorded with clock set to internal, then w/spdif. both clock settings worked. but which should i be using?

SPDIF MIRRORING:I am not using the digi spdif out currently so it should'nt matter if i leave mirroring on, right?

Any tips for using spdif or a dbx 386 ??
i allready learned that you gotta have the dbx sample rate the same as the digi, or the PCI meter pegs out, and then its time to close session

There are 2 ways:

DBX as master:
(only one connection needed; from dbx to digi)

- set the dbx as master or internal clock.
- set protools to external clock (SPDIF).

ptle as clock

(2 connections needed; from dbx to digi & from digi to dbx (for the clock)).

- set the dbx to external clock
- set the digi to internal.

I think i will go w/ pt as clock (is this the better way to go??), but where does the 2nd cable go?? digi 001 has no word clock out, only the dbx has those (bnc cable ?) connectors.

I think your only way to go is to set PT as the slave, setting SPdif in the sync options, as the 001 doesn't have a Word Clock output (and neither in); I lock my digital equipped preamps (Focusrite Octopre) using PT as slave via the Optical (ADAT) in, otherwise I obviously get digital pops and clicks due to non digital sync.
Usually the best way (according my experiences and some reading I've done on the subject) is to set the master and slave path following the signal flow: in this case from the preamp to the DAW; this is valid for this particular hook up, in other situations (like when you have a master clock generator, or when you have to sync digital equipment to analog machines with mechanical transports) the clock distribution and master/slave arrangement may be different.

Hope this helps

Thanx guys. looks like i will have to have the dbx as the clock master. so i will have to set the digi 001 to spdif. and the dbx to master.
what about if i am not using the dbx while recording. does it matter that digi 001 is still set to spdif and not internal?? or do i only select spdif as clock if i am actually using the dbx while recording??

Only select the external clock when you are recording. Make sure the samplerate of the DBX is the same as your session. Otherwise you will get speed/pitchchanges.
