Default Expanding Inputs

I'm just trying to figure out what hardware I need to expand the Digi 001. I never needed to before, but now I want to expand it, but i need to know exactly what hardware i need. I'm hearing the optical connection from a mixer will work, as long as that mixer has an optical connection on it. At the store though, the guy couldn't find the optical out, so I was thinking it's the Serial Port maybe? If someone could help me, that'd be great. Thanks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">the optical/adat connections for the 001 are on the PCI card. what, exactly, are you looking to expand? more ins, more outs, more of both?

I'm not looking to spend as much as i spent on the Digi 001, but if I can't help it then i can't help it. I've read and heard that you get up to 18 ins at once w/ the Digi 001, but i'm not sure exactly how that works. So essentialy, i just need an 8 channel mixer with an ADAT connection? or an optical connection? something like that. i've never used a mixer, i mix everything in Pro Tools on screen. thanks for your help.

If you don't want to go the direction of a mixer (like the Yamah O1v mentioned before) then your best bet is a Digimax, or SM Pro 8mkII. They both have 8 channels mic pre and optical out. So you'd add 8 channels to your setup wich is about as good as you can hope for. There are a few versions of the digimax ranging from $700 - 1300. The SM is fairly new and I think it runs about $400 plus an extra card for the optical. Hope this helps!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">on the digi 001, the adat connection = optical connection = lightpipe connection. its the same thing. digital mixers have the optical ins/out. generally you wont find a small, 8 ch, digital mixer. the O1v is 24 ch and its $1400 new plus $275 for the adat card. i think you should look at some of the other mentioned options.

although there are 8 analog inputs, there are only 2 mic pre's on the 001. a digimax, for example, will give you 8 more mic pres via the lightpipe. thats 10 mic pres total counting ones on the digi box.

or you can get 6 mic pres (like the ART pre's) and run them through the analog ins of the digi box for a total of 8. the digimax would probably sound better.

how many mic inputs do you actually need at once? if you are using a keyboard, for example, you can just plug it straight to the 1/4" ins of the digi box.

18 ins on the 001 breaks down to-
8 analog
8 adat/optical
2 s/pdif

The soundcraft M series i think has spdif outs on it , their smallest mixer in that series has 4 xlr channels and 4 stereo channels. Ive been hearing good things about the preamps in these mixers.

If you don't need pre's, the Alesis AI3 offers 8 additional inputs into the 001 via the adat connector. It runs for $399.

The Soundcraft spirit M series does indeed have s/pdif 24 bit output. Three to choose from: the M4, M8, and M12. Great mixers.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Nice Mixer for the price... but just to clarify...this mixer sends the the stereo mix to the single S/PDIF output. So you'll need to be happy with the mix going through it before tracking from the digital output.

The Yamaha O1V is upgradable to 8 assignable digital outs.
