Any Mac with a FireWire port is good for ProTools.
you need a second HD for recording. Recording to the System drive will do no good.
External FireWire HDs need an Oxford bridge chip 911, 912, 924, 936 etc.

Definitely go MAC---just a better computer and operating system for this sort of thing, as you've already heard I'm sure. As stated, any Mac will work w/firewire.....well as long as it's a new or somewhat current MacBookPro and you'll be fine. But DEFINITELY need the external hard-drive.

If you don't NEED to be portable, the iMacs can now be had with dual drives(so you wouldn't need the firewire drive). For laptops, I agree on a Mac Pro with a firewire port. Your best "bang for the buck" drives are the OWC Mercury(they even have a nice bus-powered 7200 rpm drive that fits in your pocket).
