Default Options for recording 10 tracks with 002R

Hi folks. Can anyone explain what my options are for recording 10 or more analog XLR inputs with pre's at 96 kHz @ 24-bit using an 002R and PTLE7.1? Someone once told me I could do this using an Octopre but I'm not sure how I would get 10 inputs and how to connect it with the 002R.

Any help is appreciated.

I have an octopre and have been happy with it. It connects via the ADAT light pipe. So that gives you an extra 8 channels. If you do get this look around and see if you can get one with a free ADAT card, cus typically those are sold sepertly for like $200-250. I got mine at http://www.jrrshop.com with the free card but they are not doing that anymore. So perhaps some others are offering a similar deal. Or of course you could get some other 8 channel preamp that has ADAT i/o. You could do a search on that cus there has been some dicussion on about other ones around here.

I do it all the time. I have a 002r and a Personas96k pre with 8 XLR inputs. So this gives me 12 xlr ins. I just have the Preamp hooked up via lightpipe and ADAT (personas). Make sense? also make sure your clock settings are all correct. I have the ADAT set as the master clock.

westcoast101,
To correctly answer your question..there is only one way;
-4X micpreamps in the 002R
-4X line inputs from external mic preamps(4channels)into 002R inputs 5>8
-stereo SPDIF in from 2 channel pre + AD converter.
PT LE has to clock to RCA/SPDIF
This would be 10 channels @ 96Khz.

happy tooling,

lemix nailed it. The lightpipe is a great function but does not do 96K. For general pop music and production, 24bit/48K is plenty good sounding.(for most of us anyway). Reserve the 96K for classical?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've heard that lightpipe doesn't do 96 kHz so I was confused when 2 replies suggested using it.

So, would an Octopre (or equivalent) meet your requirements for

- 4X line inputs from external mic preamps(4channels)into 002R inputs 5>8
- stereo SPDIF in from 2 channel pre + AD converter.
- PT LE has to clock to RCA/SPDIF

If so, how would I cable everything together? Could I also disable the 002R's 4 mic pre's and use the Octopre's instead?

the lightpipe can do 2 tracks at 96k if in the settings you set Optical = SPIDF or something like that

Okay, now I'm totally confused. Can anyone clarify? Can I use an Octopre + 002R to record 10 96kHz tracks? How would I cable this up?

westcoast101,
Yes you can..please refer to my above reply.
The only thing that will change if you need all 8 Octopre preamps...
-take individual line outs from the Octopre and patch them to inputs 1>8 on the 002R. The first four inputs needs to be set to "line" and the gains adjusted accordingly.
The RCA SPDIF and clock situation still remain as described.

good luck,

Okay, thanks again Lemix. I'm still not clear on what you mean by:

- stereo SPDIF in from 2 channel pre + AD converter.
- PT LE has to clock to RCA/SPDIF

Can the 2 channel pre/AD converter be the Octopre? Please elaborate.
