Default To update or not to update...

I have a question about the update and support plans.

In our studio we don't really need any of the new stuff that comes out every year, the only thing is maybe the support, but that only happened 2 times in 10 years.

Therefore your opinion:

If you don't have an active plan and then want to get back into it, will it be more expensive than if you already have an existing one that you keep going?

Or is it better in our case not to buy an active support & update plan and then get back on it sometime when you need it?

Thanks!
Michael

You can't "get back into it" anymore. Avid removed the reinstatement option. If you let your current plan lapse and want to re-enter you can only convert it to a rental plan, which is twice the price you are paying now, plus Protools can't even open when you stop paying the rental.

My advice is to just stick with the yearly update and support plan while it's still available.

Incorrect information. You still can get current. E.g. check https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...ort-for-1-year

Yes. reinstatement of PT is on sale right now. If you buy it now you get one year of updates and support, and also extra feature and Heat and other plugins, but all those will disappear if you don't renew the plan after a year. The perpetual license wil last foreve on the version you're on at the time.

Also, if you buy a reinstatement of PT on Avid site it will start to run immediately, while if you buy from a reseller, you get a reinstatement code that can be used whenever you want. I have a reinstatement code that I bought in their 2021 sale, that I'm saving until there is a new version I need. Like if/when PT is apple silicon native. I stopped renewing my perpetual in 2020.
