Default Question about license keys and old versions

I have the following software and license keys, I have recently bought a used machine running 6.9...and I dont have a key for that. Just curious if I needed a reinstall do I have any options here?

Pro Tools LE 8.0
Pro Tools LE 7.4.x
Pro Tools LE 7.3.x
Pro Tools LE 7.1.x
Pro Tools LE 7.0
Pro Tools LE 6.0
Pro Tools LE 5.3.1
Pro Tools LE 5.1

I understand there may be a puzzled look on your face

I bought a full running complete studio setup that was a sweetwater pc back in 2009, it hasnt been used more than twice in all these years.

It has 6.9 installed and working, however, I thought I would upgrade to my LE8...no go....I did a system restore and repair on the 6.9 and its back working again

I would like the option of a full wipe and reinstall if needed, thats why Im curious about the license...thats the one thing it didnt come with. They seem to have lost the paperwork

thanks for the help

Because of it being an older machine, and runs perfect at this time, I dont want to use PT8, it was a hard install and 1 plug in (eleven rack free) maxed the cpu out

Id love to run 8, but dont want any problems

Why not install LE7.4? That was a really solid version

Still using 7.4 here, rock solid. What processor are you using? My original Sweetwater rig from 2005 came with a Pentium D. Installed a Core 2 Duo years later for increased performance (same motherboard) before eventually going with a new MB and AMD processor a couple of years ago.

Its a P4 3.2

I tried installing 7.4 today and it froze on "installing hardware drivers"

I used restore to get back 6.9, put in disc and did repair, now 6.9 is running again.

However, I pulled that hard drive and put it away, put in a new drive, new XP with SP3, upped my ram to 2 gigs and am preparing to install fresh pro tools tomorrow

now, heres the gig...do I try 8.0.5...or stick with 7.4?

the computer is about 7 years old but fortunately had only 2 projects in its folders...looks like they barely used it. But its still older technology

Id love to run 8.0.5 as I paid for that, but dont want to run into any headaches if it uses more resources than 7.4

thanks for the suggestions...and if you can point me towards the windows optimizations page Id like to do those first

My guess is that your Pentium 4 @3.2Ghz is not going to be up to the task of running 8.0.5. By way of comparison, that processor has a Passmark ranking of 386. My 9 year old Pentium D @2.66ghz has a rating of 537. The Core2 Duo E4400 @ 2.0ghz that I bought at Micro Center for about $35 two years ago has a Passmark ranking of 1108. I know that Passmark rankings aren't everything, but they do give a general idea of the horsepower of various processors. I would even give you my Pentium D, but the socket is different from the Pentium 4, so it wouldn't work on your motherboard.

Thanks, do you think it will run 7.4 ok?

I guess I wish I had the 6.9 code at this point, because it actually ran well

I did get the DV Toolkit with this machine and an iLok...any chance the 6.9 license uses the iLok?

Here is the link to the Windows optimization guide for Pro tools LE:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...qrm=0&start=10

You might be able to get 7.4 to work on that machine. For all versions of Pro tools below PT9, an ilok is not required. Your Avid hardware is the ilok. The ilok is needed for third party plugins (probably also the DV toolkit).

If the link I inserted above doesn't work, just go to the top of this page, under "software updates, drivers", etc and type "windows optimization" in the search box, then scroll down to the Windows XP section.
