Sample Rate Conversion

While 192 sessions will sound great, what then? What are users current plans to convert? The end user is either 16 bit /44.1
or 16 bit /48 (broadcast) There's a huge gearbox conversion here unless people are recording at exponentials of 44.1. Anyone experiment with this yet? Go analog? Tweakhead? [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img]
My thought would be to keep sessions at 88.2 and only have a 2:1 ration when downsampling.

That sounds logical. I have seen on the DUC where Digi says the new SRC is much better now and no one will be able to hear the difference between 88.2 and 92 when converted to 44.1. They recommended recording at 88.2 just to save disk space, not because it will sound any better.

Some listening tests are due.

I've never been a fan of ProTools doing all that math. My experience, even with Mix at 48k has been to do one analog pass to a good medium like analog 1/2", or to take my PT rig to Mastering, give it to my Mastering engineer however he wants it, which, depending on the style of music, has been to make an analog pass into his rig (through some vintage Eq's and Compressors), or let him do the conversion on his much more accurate (in my opinon) esoteric, high dollar converters.

Anybody done any Tweakhead SRC's on the new HD 192 rig?

Sorry to hear of sick kids and pneumonia! In a world where time to backup sessions is not a limitation, I've thought of this angle:

192K for archival, immediately downsampled to 96K. The 192 sits in the vault for 10 years till a 192K medium is as commercially widespread as CDs are today. This gives producers the ability to remix the top projects of their careers for rerelease if record company/public demand is there.

Of course, after doing a few projects, 192 might get thrown out the window for manageability and ease. The ears will tell.

96K could be the "working" master. This will allow for DVD/A spec. Once the working master is completed at 96K, go analog at the mastering house into 44.1K with the I/O of Digi's choice... er, uh, I mean... our choice.

Right on! I didn't even think of that.
Go to MY studio, come out of the Apogees, into the Vari Mu and Massive Passive and then to Masterlink and 1/2" tape. This amonia is affecting my brain. [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]
