You can't go wrong with neve's.They are classic.but you should also try Telefunkens.

If it adds to the vibe - Telefunkem pre's were the first component mic signals hit on the legendary EMI built desks that the Beatles used at Abbey Rd Studios.
Also Steve Earl loves em and he is a cool as a moose artist studio owner / producer.
Finaly I WANT SOME!!!!

Do give the GML 8302 a listen. Fat, rich, creamy and detailed. $1850 at Mercenary.

On the 3D Audio Mic pre shootout, it kept coming up as the warmest and richest-sounding pre on my blindfold test (next to the Cranesong Flamingo).

The TAB Funkenwerk V72 is working well here for the last two weeks, Blake. At $2000 per two channel single rack space, it's a thought. I liked the neatness of the package an updated features - phantom, phase, high Z input, no cable braids - over vintage V72's.

FWIW, my favorite preamp, for voice anyway, on the 3D Audio CD was the Buzz Audio unit. It's discussed at length on the Noger Nichols www.eqmag forum, as you may know. The GML and Crane Song showed well also, as LW mentions.

It's worth cautioning that the interaction between preamp and microphone is substantial. To say that a given preamp offers the most of any single characteristic (like warmth without being fatty), or is the best of a group, probably is incomplete without considering the microphone involved. Don't you think?

It's premature for me to conclude how good the Digimax is for my drum recording needs. Others seem to like theirs; reference my other post on the unit in this DUC section. It's hard to imagine the Digimax would replace Neve's though. Not that cost is everything, but...

Incidentally, today my retailer loaned me a True Audio Precision 8, a $2100 eight channel mic pre. I'll post its performance as converted thru the RME unit, clocked by the Nanosync. It's likely to out-perform the Digimax, as it should given the cost differential.
