Default Which Multi Channel Mic Pre for ProTools

Hi there,

I'm still considering different units that have several Mic Pre with ADAT out to record a small band and send individual tracks to 002R through ADAT and line outs. There are several units like that. Some like Presonus DigiMax or Focusrite Octopre are rack mount units. Some like Tascam FW1884 or Yamaha 01V96 do more. I was talking to a few long-time audio engineers and reading reviews about importance of mic pre or EQ character. Some were saying that analog EQ is more musical, or sound of certain Yamaha digital mixers don't have a character. I'm wondering if anyone has had the chance of comparing the multi-channel mic pre units and EQs. I appreciate your input.

I imagine on the digital mixers and mic pre units, the A/D converter is located upstream of the EQ which means EQ is digital. If all digital units are like that, it means the only way to have the analog EQ is using a separate ADAT converter downstream of the analog mixer. How that sounds?

Thanks,
Arya

Focusrite ISA428+A/D option. 4 excellent pre's, no EQ, but has channel inserts. A/D is 8-channel, Soft Limiter works good, and the ISA428 has 4 XLR in's for other pre's (no inserts on these). A much overlooked piece of Class A kit. If you need 8 pre's like right now, then this isn't for you. But if you can make do with 4 for now (plus the 4 in the 002?), the ISA428+A/D gives room for expansion, and the A/D is good. Yes, you can get better mic's and pre's, at a price, but at it's price the ISA428 is a great piece of equipment.
