Geffen Extender

Hi,

Anyone have experience running USB with one of the Geffen extenders?
We have all our USB, ethernet and video running into extenders, over cat5, then to the computer about 40 feet away.
Everything is fine,(3 fader pack Procontrol, dual monitors) but we have a lot of errors when trying to get Midi happening.....missed and stuck notes while triggering Reason or PT midi tracks.
When we carry the keyboard and midi interface into the computer room, and plug it in to the computers USB port, it runs just great.
I know it must have something to do with the extender.....is there some thing we can do to make it work?
Would we be better off just running USB cables and repeaters?

Never used Gefens but we've just ordered an NTI cat5 USB extender. I'll let you know how good it deals with the MTP.

I as well have not tried the Geffen Boxes but I have extended with "Active" USB cables. (Bad results @ 25')

I went back to non-active USB extension cables and all works well. I have tried up to 35' or so.

Occasionally kensington mouseworks is not in control at startup but I have a USB (Belkin) switch at my keyboard for switching I-lok & Keyboard to my Powerbook. So a quick switch cycle (Disconnect/ reconnect) solves this.

hmm.... We have an old ADB and 2 Monitor extender units tha work great. I was just about to order a USB extension unit from Geffen this week for myself and another for a client... Maybe not.
What's that other NTI unit you guys mentioned?

I need to go about 30 to 40 feet with a USB keyboard/mouse and 2 normal flatscreen 19" monitors.

We're doing an install ( 2 HD rigs) with the computers in a machine room and we're opting to extend the actual MIDI with a midi amp/repeater to/from our HUI to the MIDI I/O. I can't recall the brand but I know Sweetwater caries them. Everyone we spoke with said stay away from MIDI over Cat5 extenders.

We have a couple of extensions systems in place:

1) Gefen Cat5 USB extensions: 70 feet, for keyboard and mouse, Mac OS 9.2.2 and Windows XP (separate systems).

2) Aten USB Repeater cables. These are 16 feet each, three connected in series allowing a Mac OS 9 keyboard and mouse to be 50 feet from the CPU.

3) Both above USB systems are attached to a Belkin active USB hub which, in turn, is attached to a G4 USB bus. Other USB devices are also attached to the same Belkin USB hub - Motu Midi Timepiece, other keyboard and mouse combo.

4) VGA monitor extension (65 feet) is done passively (no extender units) with good quality cable (Markertek custom). Three monitors mirror the same VGA image, so an Aten VGA splitter is used here.


Mickey Mouse as it all is, it works. Others relate unhappy stories about Gefen devices; my only complaint is the Gefen prices - they're very high but if the stuff works....

Gefen - Great for KVM...BAD for MIDI

Two VGA monitors, USB, ADB 150 Feet, no problems. I did find that if you have a USB hub, like for a iLock, put it on the computer before the extender.

We're using IOGEAR G2LUB16 extension cables. They give you up to 75 feet extesion (16 ft ea. for $29.99)and work flawlessly. We have them 50 ft from the machine room.Here's a link :

I am interested what people are using for their monitors. I've got a couple of NEC 1700's LCD's so what is the best / cost effective extensions?
