Default Windows 11 comes out Oct 5th

So, what will the release of Windows 11 mean for us?

Good question. From what I've read about Windows 11, there isn't much under the hood, especially with audio that has changed. The driver model is the same too, so no driver changes other than having them signed for 11. I'm sure there will be something that won't work 100%, but it seems like the impact could be minimal for DAWs.

Of course your PC has to meet the 11 requirements first, which my workstation doesn't :-(

It might well mean a lot of people going back to Macs because we need to buy a new computer in order to run it.

Mine either. Which makes no sense.

People with dual cores and 4GB of ram will be able to run W11, while I'm sitting here with 20 cores and 96GB of ram and stuck on W10.

Plus two Surfaces that are not compatible and one of them I just bought last year.

Replacing a basic laptop would not be a huge deal ($400-$800), but replacing a Workstation is a different story - these things are not cheap... looking at around 4k for what I need

Maybe once it's released there will be some way to get it installed on non-approved systems.

I bought a refurb'ed Macbook Pro because of it.

Not going to replace my powerful Windows workstation for video work, but at least I will have a system with an up-to-date OS for several years that can run Pro Tools no problem....that is until Apple starts to require the M1.

One of my clients sent me his spare Mac Mini because he wants me doing his Atmos mastering even if it's on headphones referenced to my mastering monitors.

Lots to think about...

Yes, it is good to point out that Windows 10 will still be supported until 2025. By then most people with systems that don't meet Windows 11 (or 12, who knows) requriements should be due for an upgrade.

I was able to get past the upgrade checker with my computer by enabling the fTPM and Secure Boot..

No rush for me to change. Does 11 offer any real advantage?
